Make a Penguin Shirt With This Happy Feet Two Inspired Craft

My kids are gearing up to see Happy Feet Two.  They are beyond excited about it.  So I thought it would be fun to have them help make a penguin shirt to wear when we head to the theater.

T-Shirt Craft Projects

Adorable penguin shirts hand-stamped by kids.

Items you need:

  • Plain white shirt
  • Potatoes in 3 different sizes (small, medium and large)
  • Fabric paint in black, white, orange and another color of your child’s choice

Slice each of the potatoes in half and pat them dry.   Have the kids do a test first on paper before stamping on the shirts.  Have them paint the large potato and carefully stamp it onto paper.  Next have them paint the small potato and direct them where they should stamp the wings.

Potato Stamping for Kids

Kids will love turning ordinary potatoes into fun stamps.

Move the test pieces aside and place down fresh paper.  Slide a small board inside each t-shirt to prevent the paint from going through to the back; I used cutting boards from the kitchen, cardboard would work just as well.

T-Shirt Craft Ideas

Kids will love designing their own shirts, but make sure their work is protected.

Have your kids repeat the steps they took for the sample.  Begin with the large stamp and then use the small stamp for the wings.

DIY Shirt

Using different sized potatoes, create fun t-shirt prints for kids.

Set the shirts aside to dry.  Once the paint is dry, have the kids paint the middle-sized potato with white paint and stamp over the top of the main color.

T Shirt Crafts

Add layers of different colors and sizes to your design.

Use a brush to paint on the eyes, beak, and feet.  Leave to dry overnight.
